General Information

What is metal stamping?

Stamping is a highly (cost-)efficient technique for shaping metal. The process allows us to create various shapes, holes and other features in metal using a specially designed production tool. The combination of sufficient press force and the production tool enables us to achieve the required shape in the metal with exceptional accuracy. This type of tool, known as a progressive stamping tool, combines cutting, bending and drawing operations. This provides an advantage over traditional and manual bending work.

Stamping is often carried out from a coil, a roll of metal that unwinds through the tool during the process. Each press stroke performs a specific operation on the metal, resulting in the desired finished product.

What are the benefits of stamping?

1. Efficiency: Stamping is a very fast process. Large quantities of identical products are produced in a short time.

2. Precision: Stamping makes it possible to create complex shapes and achieve accurate dimensions. The production tools guarantee precision, enabling consistent production.

3. Material savings: The material is manufactured from a sheet or strip, minimising waste.

4. Repeatability: Stamping is the most suitable method for mass production because of its consistent production process.

5. Low costs: Stamping is known as the most cost-effective production method. The initial investment in production tools pays for itself.

When is stamping commercially worthwhile?

Stamping is commercially attractive when:

  • Medium to large quantities are involved.
  • A product is purchased over a long period or on a regular basis.
  • The product geometry is fixed and repeatable.
  • To replace manual processes.
Can VDL VDS provide input during the design process?

Absolutely. We support customers during the design phase with advice on manufacturability, material selection and product optimisation.

VDL VDS Technical Industry

Stamping at VDL VDS is more than just a production process. It is an efficient and reliable way to manufacture metal components in series, with a high degree of accuracy and consistency. Our modern press lines and years of experience enable us to deliver solutions that meet our customers’ functional requirements perfectly.

We produce stamped parts in a wide range of shapes and complexities, with quality and process reliability at the forefront. Our expertise in material behaviour and product design ensures reproducible results, even with extremely critical tolerances and demanding applications.

Our Toolmaking Facility

An important differentiator for VDL VDS is our in-house toolmaking facility. Progressive, cutting and bending tools are developed, produced and maintained entirely in-house. This gives us full control over the process. It also allows us to respond quickly to changes, optimisation or scaling up.

This makes us a stable and flexible partner for long-term cooperation.

From Idea to Series Production

We actively contribute during the design phase and help customers optimise components for the stamping process. This early involvement enables us to contribute to:

  • lower production costs
  • improved manufacturability
  • shorter lead times

Where necessary, we combine stamping with other processing methods. This allows us to deliver complete semi-finished products, finished products or assemblies.
