3D laser cutting is a cutting process in which a laser precisely finishes three-dimensional products. Instead of a flat sheet part, a formed product is cut, for example after hydraulic forming. The laser creates contours, holes and cut-outs to exact dimensions.
3D laser cutting offers extensive flexibility and precision, especially for products with complex shapes. The main benefits are:
3D laser cutting is particularly suitable as an alternative to cutting tools when flexibility is required. It is also suitable for products with varying geometries. The process is often used for post-processing after hydroforming. Contours and holes are then cut into the final shape.
Because cutting takes place after forming, holes and cut-outs are positioned exactly where required. This prevents deviations that can occur when cutting beforehand, resulting in greater dimensional accuracy and a better fit. Depending on production volumes, 3D laser cutting can also be a cost-effective alternative to cutting tools, particularly for small and medium-sized series.
At VDL VDS, we use 3D laser cutting to process products formed in-house. Modern laser technology cuts complex contours and openings directly into 3D shapes, without the need for cutting tools.
3D laser cutting offers major benefits, especially after deep drawing or hydroforming. The product is fully formed first and then cut, preserving accurate dimensions and shape. This results in high product quality and maximum design freedom.
Thanks to our experience and process knowledge, we help determine the most efficient use of 3D laser cutting within the overall production process.
When product design requires holes, cut-outs or contours in a deep-drawn product, these can be added using a cutting tool or 3D laser cutting. Depending on the batch size and product complexity, we advise on the most efficient solution.
3D laser cutting excels in flexibility, short lead times and easy implementation of changes. Cutting tools, however, can be more cost-effective for larger quantities.
Our experience with both 3D laser cutting and cutting tools enables us to provide objective advice. We recommend the right process based on quantities, product requirements, total cost and investment.
