In spot welding, two or more metal components are placed on top of each other. A high electric current is then passed through them over a small area. This heat locally melts the materials together, creating a strong joint.
This process does not require filler material, such as welding wire.
Spot welding is a fast and reliable way to join metal components. The process is particularly suitable for series production.
The benefits of spot welding are:
Spot welding is particularly suitable for sheet-metal products where speed, repeatability and dimensional accuracy are important. The process is widely used for series production and structures requiring multiple weld points.
At VDL VDS, we use spot welding as a reliable and efficient joining process in our sheet metal production. We create spot-welded joints for a wide range of applications using modern spot-welding systems and automation.
Thanks to our experience and process knowledge, we can use spot welding effectively in series production. We consider more than the welding process itself. We also assess the product design, choice of materials and manufacturability. This ensures a stable process and consistent quality in the final product.
Where needed, we combine spot welding with other processes, such as stamping, robotic welding or assembly. This enables us to produce complete assemblies efficiently and cost-effectively.
By using spot welding to attach nuts, bushes and other fasteners, we deliver products ready for final assembly.
All fastening points are applied accurately in advance, precisely in the correct position. This eliminates additional assembly steps, shortens lead times and significantly reduces the risk of errors. The fixed positioning of the fasteners also ensures a consistent fit and reliable final assembly.
The result is a more efficient assembly process, lower assembly costs and predictable quality. Exactly what is needed for series production!
At VDL VDS, quality is central. During the spot-welding process, we use self-developed systems and smart automation. This prevents errors and ensures consistent quality.
Fastening elements, such as spot-weld nuts and bushes, are positioned automatically. They are correctly oriented and welded in place. This always guarantees the correct position and orientation. It minimises deviations and increases the reliability of the end product.
Our automatic detection and counting system is integrated into the spot-welding machines. As a result, fastening elements can never be omitted. This provides additional process certainty and prevents errors in later production stages.
We also perform targeted quality checks, such as torque tests. These verify that spot-weld nuts and bushes are correctly and securely attached. The product only proceeds to the next process stage once it meets all requirements.
Through this combination of automation, inspection and in-house implementations, we deliver products with predictable, consistent quality. They are fully ready for direct assembly.
